YAG Laser Iridotomy

What is Laser Iridotomy?

Laser iridotomy (Nd:YAG laser, Argon laser) is a procedure that involves creating an opening in the iris to allow the flow of intraocular fluid to the front part of the eye. This helps to balance the pressure between the front and back sections of the eye, reducing elevated intraocular pressure, alleviating severe pain, and preventing recurring attacks.

In individuals who have undergone cataract surgery, the membrane behind the lens implanted in the eye may gradually become opaque over time. This opacification slowly reduces vision, and the patient may feel as though cataracts are returning. After sufficient time has passed since the surgery, YAG laser treatment (capsulotomy) is necessary to remove this opacification.

YAG laser treatment is essentially a light-based therapy and can be performed without any physical contact with the eye using instruments or devices. It is a procedure that takes only seconds and is completely painless. The treatment is performed while the patient is seated in an examination chair.

For certain types of glaucoma (eye pressure), YAG laser iridotomy is used to lower intraocular pressure. This procedure involves creating a millimetric opening in the iris tissue, which gives the eye its color.
